Put Away: Almshouses, Asylums and Institutions in American History, Part I In-Person
Hundreds of thousands of Americans were placed in institutional settings because of a chronic mental illness, disability or "disobedient and incorrigible" behavior. Compassionate care in these facilities often eroded to abuse, neglect, epidemics and hopelessness. Yet, institutions also reflect the reality American families faced in an age before special education, psychiatric care, drug rehabilitation and laws protecting the civil rights of American with disabilities
